“Karen’s openness and non-intimidating approach made a big difference for me. The material and discussions were incredibly helpful, and she made the whole experience feel comfortable and easy to engage with.”

Most people come in feeling unsure or even skeptical after trying so many things that didn't work. This workshop doesn’t require you to have it all figured out - it simply offers a different way to approach what you’re dealing with. Most participants find that even small shifts in how they respond can make a meaningful difference.
No. You’re welcome to participate in whatever way feels comfortable to you. Sharing is encouraged - not required. Many people find they get more out of the experience when they engage in the conversations and reflections. There’s no pressure, just a supportive space to learn at your own pace.
This work is not about forcing change or waiting for your loved one to be ready. It’s about learning how to respond differently, take care of yourself, and create an environment that can support change over time. Changing how you show up, often shifts the dynamic in ways that open the door for change.
This workshop is structured and skills-based, grounded in research-informed approaches like CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), MI (motivational interviewing), and ACT (accemptance and commitment therapy). This isn't anything like a typical support group. You’ll be learning practical tools you can apply to real-life situations.
Life happens. Having access to the community for ongoing support between sessions will allow chances to get caught up. This workshop is a foundational part of the community and will be offered again and again so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to revisit and deepen your understanding over time.

Karen is the founder of Mindful Family Recovery and The Serenity Circle, serving as a Family Recovery Coach and yoga and meditation instructor. She facilitates SMART Recovery Family & Friends groups, and Invitation to Change workshops and is a certified Happy For No Reason trainer. She supports families impacted by a loved one’s addiction, helping them find strength in the midst of uncertainty.
Her work blends mindfulness with evidence-based approaches, creating a space that is both grounded and practical. Karen brings a calm, compassionate presence to this work, helping people feel seen, supported, and empowered to respond in new ways.
Karen’s lived experience includes growing up in a home impacted by alcoholism and later navigating the difficulties of a partner’s alcohol use, including separation and the challenges of co-parenting. Those experiences shaped the way she relates to this work, and she now shares what she wishes she had known during that time - offering a grounded understanding of the complexity addiction brings to families.

Paula, the founder of A New Perspective Coaching, is a parent recovery coach and support group facilitator with over six years of experience. She supports families impacted by a loved one’s substance use using evidence-based approaches including CRAFT, Motivational Interviewing, SMART Recovery Family & Friends, and the Invitation to Change model.
She came to this work as a mother searching for a way to cope with her own sons’ substance use disorder. What she found in this compassionate, science-based approach changed everything. It helped her rebuild connection, create space for honest conversations, and respond with understanding instead of fear.
Paula also brings her own recovery experience to this work, with over 35 years of sobriety. She understands addiction from both sides - personally and professionally - and creates a space where families feel supported, understood, and able to move forward in a different way.
“This work broke my heart wide open... I hope it does the same for you.”
